About
I am the Chair of Sense About Science, an independent campaigning charity founded in 2002 that promotes the public interest in sound science and evidence by challenging the misrepresentation of science and advocating for honesty in public discussions and policy. I am also the Chair of the UK Clinical Research Collaboration (UKCRC) Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) Network Executive Group which brings together over 50 registered CTUs from across the UK.
I was the Executive Director of the Academy of Medical Sciences (AMS) from October 2019 until April 2025. Prior to taking up my role at the Academy, I was the National Director for Patients, Carers and the Public at the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), and Chair of INVOLVE – the national advisory group for the promotion and support of public involvement in research funded by NIHR. I was Chief Executive of the Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC) from 2006 until 2011 and, prior to this, Director of Corporate Communications at the Royal College of Physicians from 2003. I also worked in corporate communications for Procter & Gamble in the United States from 1997 to 2000. I was awarded the OBE for services to NHS, public health and social care research in the Queen’s Birthday Honours 2018. I have extensive experience in strategy development, governance, change management and culture change.
A consistent focus of my career has been the promotion and advancement of public involvement in health research and the democratisation of science. Memberships include Fellowship of the Royal Society of Medicine (FRSM) and Royal Society of Arts (RSA) and my all important Season Ticket for Crystal Palace FC.
